Welcome
We're a small risk consultancy specialising in Africa, all four corners. We see North Africa, for example, through an African lens not merely as an extension of the Middle East.

If you are looking at big-picture questions like market entry, political risk, or mapping key stakeholders, we can help. Likewise, if you have a focused need, such as checking out a sub-contractor or partner, no problem.

Although based outside Africa, the bulk of our work is done by our team of African experts on the ground.
What We Do
We can support clients in all sectors but welcome the opportunity, especially, to work with non-governmental organisations seeking to improve their knowledge and management of risk and policy development in Africa.

We understand the reality, that Africa (contrary to much uninformed prejudice and/or lazy assumptions) is the most diverse continent on earth.

Our most recent multi-market and single-market sector client projects include telecoms, agriculture, local government, mining, energy and more, in countries as diverse as Libya, Ethiopia, Niger, Angola, Liberia, Senegal, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

If you have a need in other parts of the world, we have trusted partners, who think like us, that we work with.

The Horizon

Political risk assessments – tailored to your business or organisational needs, short term or long term. This can include everything from high-level (country or sector) assessments to micro-level, eg bespoke work on politically-exposed persons (PEPs).

Compliance Support

Standard due-diligence, anti-money laundering and reputation risk, bespoke business intelligence and research on specific markets, sectors and issues, on one country or a combination of several or more.

Training

Helping managers, board members and senior staff approach Africa risk management in simple, interactive, jargon-free day modules using case studies and open source techniques.

Market Intelligence and Navigation

Helping you understand who you need to know, and who you don't, and how to navigate new (or established) markets effectively, ethically and legally.

Our Services

We can tailor our services to meet your specific project needs, but here is a general sense of what we offer and a rough timeline for a delivery once commissioned.

Level One (basic)
Due Diligence

To scope a potential investment, senior-level hire, business partner or sub-contractor; encompassing a public-records check in-country and internationally, including sanctions databases, etc. (7-14 days)

Level Two (deeper) Investigative Due Diligence

Decision Support Service. The same as level one, with the addition of more detailed, confidential reputational enquiries on the ground from informed local sources, plus a wider check of semi-public assessment of any political exposure, money-laundering risk, etc. (14-28 days)

Level Three (long-term) Reputational Due Diligence

For example, arbitration or litigation support: plus regular 'business intelligence' reporting and advice, designed (eg) to fit with an emerging public and media communications strategy. (usually l-3 months)

Bespoke

In the past, we have been asked to help with travel advice, identify potential local business partners, and support reputation protection activities, etc. NB: we do not to work with or for governments or political parties.

Asset-tracing and Forensic Investigations

Specialised activities that we would usually develop with partners, combining our geographic specialism with their technical capabilities. (timelines will vary widely, depending on specific needs).

Stakeholder Mapping

Especially useful for new market or sector entry, for example assessments of the 30 key influencers in a specific sector (encompassing business, politics, media, non-governmental and other stakeholders), and/or any inter-linkages between them, along with recommendations for prioritising relationship development. (14-28 days, depending on complexity of task)

Political Risk Assessments

Especially useful in fragile or semi-fragile states or countries in conflict, where clients have vulnerable personnel, assets, partners and/or suppliers (and opportunities). (Timelines will vary depending on need: usual model is one assessment every 7 days, supplemented by emergency alerts, eg if risk horizons evolve quickly.

Training

Jargon-free introduction to senior management and boards on how and why (reputationally and legally) they need to take risk management seriously, how it costs them peanuts compared to the cost of clean-up and how to understand the options available to them, based on actual case-studies and practical examples. (Full-day training)

Several things make us different

Why Choose Us

Many in this sector will promise you a ‘smoking gun’ or guarantee you the definitive piece of the risk jigsaw you think you need. The truth is that sometimes we get lucky in that respect, but very rarely. Our goal is to provide you with at least 50% of information you need to make an informed decision, based on factual data, corroborated from open and confidential sources, contextualised for the market or issue in question. We will nearly always find something important that you did not know but needed to.
We price fairly (we don’t have huge overheads) and we insist that our African partners on the ground are paid properly for their time and their expertise. We don’t cut corners.
We will not work for more than one client in the same sector in the same African market. If we are working for you in three or more African countries, and you are looking for a partner across the continent, then we will not work for anyone else in your sector at all. That concept used to be called ‘conflict of interest’. Others in our sector happily work with their clients’ competitors and will often recycle for those competitors research that they have done for you. Even if you stop being our client, we won’t recycle.
We will not take briefs that demand we deliver partial or selective information, or skew facts to suit someone’s pre-determined brief. We deliver what we find, objectively. Language is also important: if we find something articulated as an allegation, we call it that. If we identify something of potential concern that cannot be corroborated fully, we say so.
No-one is perfect, the world is full of grey areas, and we’re bound to make mistakes. But we won’t work with organisations that have a proven exploitative track record in Africa or a history of supporting abusive regimes there. We observe the law where we work: we don’t pay officials for information, for example, or knowingly work with organisations that hack or otherwise seek to obtain information illegally. We have our own strict anti-corruption policies.
We may support the activities of trusted partners, but only when we know who the ultimate ‘end-client’ is (see above).
Who We Are
Perygl is a young company, but we have been working in and on this space for around twenty years, with experience of government, media, the voluntary sector and private sector.

Perygl is a Welsh language word meaning problem, risk and danger.

Our logo – a variant of the Ouroboros dragon – symbolises the cycle of renewal and prosperity, and the reality that the flip-side of risk is opportunity.
There are far more success stories than failures in Africa.

Our goal is to help you succeed.
